Solid Shampoo and Hair Balm: A Simple Hair Ritual with Fewer Bottles

I’m Olena, and my shower shelf used to hold a liquid shampoo, a conditioner, a deep mask, a leave-in spray, and dry shampoo. Now the two main products I use in the shower are a solid shampoo bar and a hair balm. After washing, I sometimes add a small bottle of rosemary hydrosol.

Two products simplified my shower shelf

The routine is simpler, the shelf is less crowded, and I buy far fewer plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles.

A solid shampoo bar is concentrated because there is no water in the formula. One bar can outlast several bottles, depending on hair length, washing frequency, and how the bar is stored.

A hair balm does the job of a rinse-out conditioner: it smooths the lengths, softens the hair, and makes combing easier.

How to use a solid shampoo bar

Wet your hair thoroughly. Rub the bar between your hands to build lather, or glide it directly along the scalp. Massage with your fingertips, focusing on the scalp rather than the lengths. Rinse well.

Place the bar on a dish or rack where it can dry fully between uses. Good drainage is what helps it last.

A solid bar may feel different during the first few washes if you are used to bottled shampoo. After a little practice, you learn how much product and lather your hair needs.

If you’re new to shampoo bars, the 7 Herbs Solid Shampoo is an easy place to start.

Why use a balm after shampooing

After cleansing, the lengths may feel rougher or become harder to detangle, especially if the hair is dry, colour-treated, or long.

After shampooing, apply a small amount of balm to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Smooth it through with your hands, leave it on briefly, and rinse well. It helps soften the hair, reduce friction, and make detangling easier.

Add a mist — the optional third step

After towel-drying, mist rosemary hydrosol along the scalp and massage gently for about twenty seconds. It adds a fresh herbal step after washing without making the shower routine more complicated.
