How to Wash Your Face Without Stripping It: A Gentle Double Cleanse

Some evenings you don’t need a reset — you just need to take the day off your skin. Not scrub it off. Not strip it raw. Just lift it away, gently, so your face can breathe while you sleep.

That tight feeling isn’t clean

I’m Olena, and I’ve formulated cleansers for years. The one thing I wish more people understood: if your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser is doing too much. That tightness isn’t ‘deep clean’ — it’s your skin’s acid mantle stripped down to nothing. Your mantle sits around pH 5.5, slightly acidic on purpose. It takes hours to rebuild after a harsh wash. The tight feeling is damage, not progress.

Oil first: how a wash oil works

Oil dissolves oil. Makeup, sunscreen, the day’s natural sebum — they’re oil-based, and water alone won’t budge them. A hydrophilic cleansing oil works with that chemistry: you massage it onto dry skin with dry hands, and it breaks everything down gently. Then you add water. The oil turns milky — that’s the ‘hydrophilic’ part, the moment it bonds to water — and rinses away clean. No greasy residue. No cotton pads. No rubbing.

Our Hydrophilic Cleansing Oil is one step instead of a separate makeup remover, micellar water, and first cleanser. It’s $12.70 for 100 ml.

Foam second: the gentle finish

After the oil rinse, a gentle foaming cleanser sweeps away whatever’s left — traces of emulsified oil, any remaining impurities. The key word is ‘gentle.’ Our Foaming Facial Cleanser uses soft surfactants that lather without stripping. It’s called Tenderness for a reason — the scent is light and quiet, not perfumy. Your skin should feel clean and comfortable afterward. Not tight, not shiny, just ready for whatever comes next.

It’s $12.70 for 150 ml. A little goes a long way because a small pump foams up more than you’d expect.

How to double cleanse (step by step)

Step 1: Dry hands, dry face. Pump the cleansing oil and massage in small circles for twenty to thirty seconds. Focus on the T-zone, jaw, wherever makeup or sunscreen sits.

Step 2: Wet your hands, massage again. The oil turns milky. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Step 3: A small amount of foaming cleanser on damp skin. Lather gently, rinse.

Step 4: While your skin is still damp, press in your hydrosol — lavender, rose, witch hazel, whichever suits you — then your moisturizer on top. Damp skin absorbs better than dry.

When you don’t need both

Morning? Usually the foam alone is enough. Your skin didn’t accumulate makeup overnight. Save the oil cleanse for evenings, or for days when you wore sunscreen or heavy makeup. One cleanser for light days, both for full days. Simple means sustainable — a routine you’ll actually keep.

A softer way to take the day off.

Start with Hydrophilic Cleansing Oil, follow with Foaming Facial Cleanser, and finish while your skin is still damp with a botanical hydrosol.
